Gifted & Talented

Welcome to Ratton School, my name is Mr. Miles and I am the Leading Teacher for Gifted & Talented education. It is my job to ensure that children with exceptional ability in different subjects receive a challenging and stimulating education during their time here. I will monitor progress and provide support and advice to students, parents and teachers so that we can achieve together.
So what does gifted and talented mean?
Gifted describes learners who have the ability to excel academically in one or more subjects such as English, Maths, History, etc.
Talented describes learners who have the ability to excel in practical skills such as sport, leadership, artistic performance, or in an applied skill (through practice).
Teachers at Ratton plan work to suit everyone’s level of ability and personalise learning because every child matters.
The gifted and talented cohort could represent up to 10% of students on roll (125 pupils across the school).
Gifted and talented students are identified using teacher judgements and through assessment moments (APP).
Teachers at Ratton School plan extension activities within lessons and extra curricular enrichment opportunities for gifted and talented pupils. All students identified as gifted and talented are encouraged to make the most of these opportunities.
Enrichment opportunities include:
• Spelling Bee
• Chess/backgammon tournament
• Ratton’s Got Talent contest
• You’ve Got Talent (inter-school final)
• Trivia Challenge (general knowledge)
Extension activities include:
• Mandarin Lessons (at Moira House School)
• Maths Challenge
• Latin (at Eastbourne College)
• Early entry GCSE’s
• Art Challenge (including exhibition)
• Archaeology Club
• STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) clubs
