Community Arts
Community Arts
Since its designation as a performing arts school in 2002 Ratton School and The Cavendish School have delivered a wide reaching and varied Community Arts programme through their joint Community Arts Team.
The list of successful projects the team has undertaken in the last six years is extensive, and too many to mention individually. However, highlights include:
The Eastbourne Children's Carnival; a colourful and vibrant parade along Eastbourne's seafront which has attracted over 3000 participants in the last six years.
Redoubt Replay; a partnership project with Willingdon Community Arts, East Sussex Youth Service, Compass Community Arts, Evolution Theatre Company and The Redoubt Fortress & Military Museum. Young people from across the town created a spectacular multi-media performance and installation at the Redoubt Fortress funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund's Young Roots programme.
Circus Monkeys; a weekly circus club which has seen participants of all ages develop a wide range of skills from juggling to poi and stilt walking to uni-cycling. Members have also performed at Eastbourne's Festival of Fire, the Chichester Festival and at the Winter Gardens.
As a new development each school now has its own Community Arts Department allowing the collaborative community projects to continue, whilst providing more time and expertise to develop in-school projects.
This February, a selected group of students and staff will be visiting 'Wookey Hole' in Somerset to partake in a circus workshop. The trip is sure to be a valuable and exciting event for all involved and will help greatly to develop skills of our Circus Monkeys, and provide an in-depth look into a very advanced and accomplished group of circus performers at Wookey. Stay tuned for all the latest news and info of the project!
Led by our Arts Development Officer Miz (Maria) Wells our community arts team is keen to hear about any project ideas our students and parents have. For more information call 01323 514322 or email m.wells@ratton.e-sussex.co.uk
